Why back teeth
The biting surfaces of molars are not flat. They have deep grooves and pits that collect food and plaque, and are too narrow for a toothbrush bristle to clean properly. That is where most childhood decay starts. A sealant flows into those grooves and sets, leaving a smooth surface that can actually be cleaned.
Who benefits most
Children, as soon as the adult molars come through, usually around six and again around twelve. Adults with deep grooves and no decay in them yet can also benefit. It is quick, needs no drilling and no injection, which makes it a good first experience of the dentist for a nervous child.
How long they last
Several years, though they wear and are worth checking at each visit. Reapplying a worn sealant is far cheaper and easier than filling the cavity it would have prevented.
Common questions
Does my child need an injection?
No. Nothing is drilled and the tooth is not touched below the surface. The tooth is cleaned, the sealant painted on, and set with a light.
At what age should we come?
Once the first adult molars appear, usually around six years old, and again when the second molars come through around twelve.
Do sealants replace brushing?
No. They protect the grooves on the biting surface only. The sides of the teeth and the gum line still need brushing and flossing.
